It was a sunny day with a nice light north-easterly breeze blowing as we boarded the Mary Ellen 3 to be greeted by our hosts Kathy and Jonah for a cruise around the Port of Newcastle. The boat was comfortable and the crew very knowledgeable about the Port as Jonah (Capt. Jonah to his friends) had spent a great deal of his life around the harbour in different capacities both on the water and ashore. Kathy had grown up on the water working on her father’s oyster leases and sailing.
Many interesting sights were pointed out with stories of past and present happenings being told as we cruised around the Port. We were able to get up close to very large coal ships as they entered the Port. I would recommend this outing to any one that wants a pleasant afternoon on the water.
